The Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a sociocultural anthropologist for the new Lambros Comitas Chair in the Programs in Anthropology. In keeping with Professor Comitas’s interests, in addition to demonstrating an outstanding record of ethnographic research and writing, applicants should have experience in anthropological theory and applied, practicing, public, or engaged anthropology.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
Teachers College, Columbia University seeks a sociocultural anthropologist for the new Lambros Comitas Chair in the Programs in Anthropology. In keeping with Professor Comitas’s interests, in addition to demonstrating an outstanding record of ethnographic research and writing, applicants should have experience in anthropological theory and applied, practicing, public, or engaged anthropology.

Some desirable areas of research include education beyond schooling; effects of the climate crisis; health and wellness; family, community, and youth studies; debates about history and heritage; engagement with technologies and new media; the impact of NGOs, community organizations, and medical and scientific entities; or intersections of religion and public action.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose experience complements and expands those of current faculty, including those in the other program in the International and Comparative Education Department. Geographic areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, Africa, South or East Asia, the Caribbean, and Europe. We especially welcome candidates with a track record of external funding and experience teaching and advising graduate students through the doctoral level.

Applicant must have an outstanding record of ethnographic research and writing, experience in anthropological theory and applied, practicing public or engaged anthropology. Desirable areas of research include education beyond schooling; effects of the climate crisis; health and wellness;

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a vibrant program of research.
  • Teach graduate level courses like public culture, ethnographic research methods, and beyond.
  • A successful advocate would bring new courses to the program.
  • Advise master’s and doctoral students.

Applicants must have an outstanding record of ethnographic research and writing, experience in anthropological theory and applied, practicing public or engaged anthropology. Desirable areas of research include education beyond schooling; effects of the climate crisis; health and wellness; family, community, and youth studies; debates about history and heritage; engagement with technologies and new media; the impact of NGOs, community organizations, and medical and scientific entities; and intersections of religion and public action.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in anthropology preferred (including anthropology and education or applied anthropology) 
  • Professional history of research, publication, teaching, and service commensurable with tenure in a distinguished faculty position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with women and racially minoritized students encouraged to apply.

$126850 - $186809
